Fight the Blight Day

E-mail Print PDF
All,

I am excited to announce that Ponchatrain Park was chosen as one of the city’s anchor location for its Fight the Blight Day which will be held on Saturday December 10, 2011 from 9am-1pm. I am asking for your help to make this a successful Fight the Blight Day. I am asking that you will help us with recruiting between 50-100 volunteers so that we may have a tremendous impact against blight in this area. I have also attached a Fight the Blight Menu for you to review as you will be responsible for helping us develop a scope of work in that area. The scope of work will encompass the park and everything within a 5 block radius in all directions. I would like to have the scope of work done by this Thursday so that I may submit it to the city for approval. Your help with this effort will be greatly appreciated.

Develop a Wish List of what might be able to be done through the Fight the Blight initiative to improve the anchor location and surrounding blocks

For a playground / playspot / park:

  • Painting: clubhouse or other buildings; fences; garbage cans; welcome signs; striping on basketball courts; existing playground equipment
  • Building new assets: picnic tables; benches; garbage can enclosures
  • Improving facilities: spreading dirt on a baseball field; litter abatement; weed abatement
  • Landscaping: planting trees; building plant beds; mulching

For the surrounding blocks:

  • Storm drains repaired or cleaned
  • Storm drains stenciled for “no dumping”
  • Lots cleared: by INAP if the address is qualified, or 10’ easement if volunteers and equipment are available
  • Blighted houses demolished; this all depends on Code Enforcement processes
  • Abandoned automobiles towed away
  • Removal of heavy debris, such as tires, tree limbs, dumped appliances and furniture
  • Rodent treatment of existing piles of debris, followed by removal of those piles by Sanitation
  • Neutral ground and public green space beautification
  • Trees planted in public green space
  • Placement of permanent garbage cans
  • Litter abatement
  • Graffiti removal
  • Fire Hydrants repaired
  • Street signs replaced
  • Potholes filled
